Clinic Appointments and Evaluations

In the Dermatology Clinic at The Children’s Hospital, your child will see a pediatric dermatologist who will begin with a thorough visual examination. This will require your child to remove some or all of his or her clothing. In some cases, the physician might recommend a skin biopsy, skin scrape or blood tests, which can be performed in the clinic the same day. Following the examination and possible skin or blood testing, the dermatologist will make recommendations for treatment.

If Your Child Needs a Surgical Procedure

If a surgical procedure is necessary, the pediatric dermatologist will determine whether the procedure will take place the same day, or if it needs to be rescheduled. Then the dermatologist works with the patient and family to discuss whether a local anesthetic or general anesthetic in Children’s pediatric-specific surgical program is the best option. Patients who undergo surgeries performed in the Dermatology Clinic have the option of watching or listening to videos or music to help make the procedure as non-traumatic as possible.

Why Choose The Children’s Hospital for Skin Conditions

From pediatric dermatologists who consider themselves “pediatricians first, then kids at heart,” to innovative approaches that make treatments as non-invasive as possible, to the latest state-of-the-art clinical services, The Children’s Hospital strives to make evaluating and treating a wide range of skin conditions the best possible experience for children and their families. And we’ve had years of experience. Dr. William Weston, the first pediatric dermatologist at The Children’s Hospital, is widely considered one of the “founding fathers” in the field of pediatric dermatology, and helped find the Society for Pediatric Dermatology. Dr. Weston also co-authored one of the premier textbooks in pediatric dermatology, along with Dr. Joseph Morelli, chief of Pediatric Dermatology at Children’s. Years of experience combined with specialized training make dermatologists at The Children’s Hospital experts in understanding the sensitive needs of children with various skin conditions.
