Sunscreen Savvy Tips for Parents and Kids
Your Hub
Joanna M. Burch, MD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at The Children's Hospital, provides expert advice on how to protect your children from the increased sun exposure during the warm summer months.
Important information includes:
- Purchase sunscreen that is equal or greater than 30 SPF and protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Sun blocks protect against a broader range of the sun's rays and are better than sunscreen if only one product is used. However, when combined with zinc oxide or titanium oxide, sunscreens provide a wider range of coverage.
- Sunscreen should be applied to the skin 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and should be reapplied every two hours if you swim.
- Sunscreen should be applied in 1 ounce increments per person. For a day at the beach, a person should use between one-quarter to one-half of an 8 ounce bottle of sunscreen.
