Should Kids Get Adult Heart Disease Drugs?

Colorado Public Radio

The childhood obesity epidemic has pediatricians prescribing adult heart disease medications for children at a growing rate. The Children's Hospital's Stephen Daniels, MD, pediatrician-in-chief, and Phillip Zeitler, MD, endocrinology, spoke with Eric Whitney of Colorado Public Radio on the topic.

One of Dr. Zeitler's 14-year-old patients with type 2 diabetes was also interviewed. The patient entered the hospital's TODAY (Treatment Options for type 2 Diabetes in Adolescence and Youth) study when she was 12 years old and 250 pounds. Today she is 50 pounds lighter, compliant with her meds and tracking, more motivated and doing well in school.
