Children's Cardiac Care Welcome Program Spurs Wonderful Events

After two-month-old Noah Hunter underwent a successful open heart surgery to rectify a heart defect in 2007, the Hunter family established Hiking for Hearts—a hike that raises funds and awareness for the Welcome Program of the Heart Institute at The Children's Hospital.

The program, founded by welcome coordinator Peg Ayan, is designed to assist the non-clinical needs of families in the cardiac unit. Ayan serves as a vital anchor and support system for families of children with heart problems, working as their 24/7 resource for everything from booking hotel reservations to explaining in their child's upcoming surgery in simple terms.

The Welcome Program has touched many lives and inspired Colorado locals and tourists alike to hike 14ers to help raise support. 5280 Magazine profiled the Hunter family, Ayan's career at Children's and The Children's Hospital in a recent article titled, "Because of Noah ."
