Helping Families Cope With Serious Illness

Cancers and blood disorders conjure feelings of fear and anxiety, especially if you’re forced to watch your own child fight for survival. The Children’s Hospital offers resources you and your child need to battle these diseases.

The hematology/oncology (HEM/ONC)unit, which opened at The Children’s Hospital Rick Wilson Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in October 2007, is equipped with 24 inpatient beds, an outpatient clinic and an infusion center, enabling patients in the Denver metro area to receive care within their home community. With the resources available through this addition, Children’s is able to provide top-quality cancer care for children and adolescents from birth through their early 20s who are facing the following:

  • Blood diseases
  • Bone marrow transplantation
  • Cancers, such as leukemia

Hope for the Future

With well over 80 percent of pediatric cancer patients now finding cures for their conditions,

The Children’s Hospital Rick Wilson Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders continues to provide the highest level of services while performing pioneering research to improve cure rates.

“Our goal in the HEM/ONC unit is to provide an atmosphere that is comfortable for both patients and their families while striving to improve our patients’ chances for recovery,” said Stephen Hunger, Chief of the Section of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation and Ergen Family Chair in Pediatric Cancer at Children’s. “By having a compassionate team of nurses and physicians who provide care for children and adolescents, we have created an environment that is not available anywhere else in the region.”
