Keep Them Reading!

After an incredible seven installments, the Harry Potter book series is finished, and your child hasn’t picked up a book since. Want to get your child back into reading for the long term? Here are a few ways to make it happen.

  • Give the gift of books. Encourage family members to give your child their favorite books for holiday and birthday presents and inscribe a note detailing why they loved the book. Or, take a cue from his Harry Potter fascination and buy him the first book in a series matched to his interests.
  • Make your child a member. Signing your child up for a library membership allows him to take control of his reading destiny. Library cards make kids feel grown up, and you’ll be surprised at how excited they are to head
to the library.
  • Be a positive example. If your child sees you reading on a regular basis, he will want to do the same. Turn off the television and grab a book, and watch your household become a haven for bookworms.
  • Go with a mixed-media approach. Find books featuring characters from your child’s favorite movies or television shows. This way, he is already interested in the characters so
getting started with the book will be easy.
  • Don’t overlook non-books. If your child isn’t interested in reading books, pick up a stack of magazines or books-on-tape. After all, any reading is better than none!
